On March 1, 2006 Voices Of Iowa went to the Iowa State Capitol to lobby for a bill that would make insurance companies pay for colorectal cancer screening. In April we went to Washington, D.C. and participated in OVAC (One Voice Against Cancer) Lobby Days to encourage Representatives and Senators to budget more money for cancer. The current budget wants to lower the amount of funding for cancer.
Past Voices Of Iowa Activities Raffles
We have done several raffles in the past that were mostly items donated from local businesses which are greatly appreciated. One raffle we had included items to make different theme baskets. Some raffle items are gift certificates to area restaurants. Count Down To March With this fund-raiser and awareness project, we involved the local middle school asking the students to bring in change for the whole month of February. The class with the highest amount of change collected won a pizza and pop lunch. Cut-A-Thon/Massage-A-Thon This project included a local hair dresser who happened to be a Voices Of Iowa member and a massage therapist. Both graciously donated their time and energy doing massages and hair cuts for donations. Voices Of Iowa Variety Show This was a wonderful way to get attention to colorectal cancer and a great opportunity to do some teaching! Local talent sang, danced, performed and made the audience laugh. Years later people still make comments about the shows. We have had two and will probably continue to make this an every other year tradition. Fish and Flamingo Yard Ornament Fund-raiser This project was a lot of fun and will be a yearly event. A 5 foot wood sword fish and bright pink stuffed flamingo travels to various yards throughout the community. A donation of $3.00 is asked to have the yard ornaments removed. If the home owner would like to have the fish or flamingo moved to another yard they pay a $5.00 fee. This is also another awareness tactic that is often talked about. Relay For Life Team and Concession Stand Voices Of Iowa has had a Relay For Life team(American Cancer Society annual fund-raiser) and ran the concession stand one year. Colossal Colon A few members of Voices Of Iowa (ages ranged 12-61) drove down to St. Louis in 2003 and worked for 4 hours in the heat helping the Colossal Colon workers teach others about colon cancer and proper screening. It was a wonderful learning experience on our part, too. The Colossal Colon is an over sized model of a human colon that is forty feet long and four feet tall. People can crawl through it to see what different diseases of the colon look like. |
